Itstillseemslikemagic.Orrather,agrandadventure-onethatImostcertainlywanttobepartof.

Myinterestinappliedsciencedatesbacktomyschool

days.Duringhighschool,Iwasfascinatedwithelectronicgadgets.Soonthereafter,designingandbuildingbasiccircuitsstartedasahobby.Alongtheway,however,Irealizedthattheproblem-solvingaspectofmakingelectronicgadgetswaswhatIenjoyedthemost.Engineeringwasanaturalcareerchoiceafterthis.

DuringmyundergraduatestudiesattheElectronics&CommunicationdepartmentofM.K.CollegeofEngineering,subjectslikeMicroprocessors,C-Programming,ComputerNetworksinterestedmethemost.Iwasawestruckby

thepotentialofIntel8086microprocessor,moresobythemannerinwhichitsfasterandmorepowerfulcousinsrevolutionizedtheworkingofcomputersinadecade.IwasnowdeterminedtofocusonmicroprocessorsduringmyFinalYearproject.

IelectedtodotheprojectatNationalSpaceResearchOrganization(NSRO)asithasanoutstandinginfrastructuresetupandastimulating,world-classresearchenvironment.Thisenabledmetoworkwitsomeofthebestmindsdedicatedtoengineeringresearchinmycountry.Igainedalotfromthisassociation-inparticular,anideaofhowrewardingandmeaningfulacareerinresearchcouldbe.Themoretangiblebenefitshavebeenadeeperinsightinto

architectureandworkingofmicroprocessorsandthoroughC-programmingskills.SometimesIspentmorethantenhoursadayatNSRO,readingmanualsandtroubleshootingcircuitsanddebuggingcode.Iamgladtosaytheeffortpaidoffintheend.Mr.Tendulkar,myprojectguide,deemedtheresultsofmyprojecttobemostvaluable.TheinterfacecardthatIdesignedwaslateraddedtoNSRO'sSpacecraftInterfaceSimulator(SIS)systems.Thisprojectwasthehighlightofmyacademiccareer.Mostimportantly,IleftNSROwiththedecisiontostudyadvancedcomputing.

DuringmyfirstjobatNevilleEngineeringandLocomotiveCo.(NELCO),Idevelopedareal-timemonitoringsystemfortheMoldingLineinFoundry.Successonthisprojectgavemetheconfidencetoprovide

softwaresolutionstoreal-lifeproblems.AlthoughIlikedthejob,softwaredevelopmentatNELCOwasasupportfunction.IthereforeswitchedtoMohinderBelgianTelecomLtd.(MBT),amultinationalcompanyprovidingsoftwaresolutionsinwide-rangingfields,telecommunicationsbeingitsforte.AtMBT,IhavebeeninvolvedwithProjectART,BelgianTelecom'snewfront-endsystemprovidingintelligentaccesstoits

CustomerServiceSystem(CSS).Workingonthisprojecthashelpedmehonemyprogrammingskillsonreal-lifeproblems.Idevelopedanappreciationof'thebigpicture',andconverselyhowimportantdetailsare.Ialsodiscovered

leadershipskillsinmyself,andfrequentlyassistedcolleagueswhohadlittleornobackgroundincomputers.Asanoutcomeofthis,thecompanyaskedmetotakeoccasionalseminarsonOperatingSystemsandC-Programming

formycolleagues.IhavebeenappointedTeamLeaderwithinayearandtoday,IindependentlylookafterenhancementsandmaintenanceofthreemodulesoutofthesixteeninProjectART.

DuringmyworkonprojectARTatMBTandthroughmyinteractionwithcolleagues,IhavegrowntoadmiretheroleofComputerNetworksinempoweringend-users.IamnotdirectlyinvolvedwithComputerNetworksinmyjob,butthroughavidreadingofperiodicalsandjournalslike'NetworkWorld',Ihavesustainedmyinterestinthefield.Infact,afterreadingabouttheimmensepotentialofpath-breakingprotocolssuchas'Multicast'

andapplicationslike'VoiceOverIP'and'VirtualPrivate

Networks',I

cannothelpbutfeelexcitedaboutthepotentialfornewresearchinthisarea.

Whilemypresentjobhashelpedmedevelopathoroughinsightintoprojecthandling,theindustryenvironmentthatIamcurrentlyincannotsupportmy

desireforresearch.Ipossessindustry-hardenedskillsinComputers,butImustbuildonthesetoachievemygoalofundertakingcutting-edgeresearch

inadvancedcomputing,withspecificreferencetoComputerNetworks.IthereforebelievethatImustreturntotheacademicworldforfurther

growth.

IwishtoearnanMSdegreeinComputerScience.IintendtofollowthisupwithaPh.D.,andlater,acareerinresearchandteaching.Ihavespoken

tomyprofessors,seniorsandcolleaguesaboutmychoiceofUniversity,andhaveappliedtoPrincetonUniversitybecauseitisreputableforitsresearchfacilitiesandcomputingresources.Thedepartmentwebsite

revealedaverystrongfacultyinvolvedinextensiveresearchintheareaofComputerNetworks.Thishasstrengthenedmyresolvetostudyat

PrincetonUniversity.

IbringalongastronggraspoffundamentalsinElectronicsandComputers,anaptitudeforteachingandteamwork,azestforchallengesandan

enthusiasticdesiretolearnallIcan.Iwouldliketotakewithme,inadditiontoknowledgeofComputerNetworks,anetworkofstrongandlasting
