IgottoknowhimpersonallylastsemesterwhenhewastakingthecourseofSpecialTopicsonInternationalFinancethatIwasteaching.Intheclass,heshowedgreatinterestineconomics.Hestudiedconscientiouslyandoftentalkedwithmeaftertheclassaboutthequestionsthathehadcomeacrossinhisreadings.Oncewhenwetalkedaboutthecountry'songoingrestructuringofitstaxsystem,hedelvedintotheincreasingcostoftaxevasion.Wethendiscussedseveralmethodsofcalculatingthecost.Aswetalked,Ifoundthathewasveryskilledinexpressinghisideasthroughdiagrammaticcurvesandmathematics.Recognizingthatthegovernment'sattitudestoactsoftaxevasionwillaffectnotonlypeople'sbehaviorbutalsothecostoflevyingtaxes,hesawpossiblesolutionstotheproblemintheGameTheory.Iencouragedhimtopursuethisidea.Hesaidhedidn'tknowmuchabouttheGameTheoryandproceededtoborrowsomeessaysbyNashfromme.Hethusleftmewithadeepimpression.

Studyingwithconscientiousness,Mr.Huioftencameupwithcreativeideas.Unlikesomeotherstudents,hestudiednottojustpasstheexamsbuttoreallyimprovehisknowledgeandexpertise.Hestandsoutamonghisfellowclassmateswithanunmistakablethirstforgenuineunderstandingofthecountry'seconomicrealitiesandproblems.Thathaswonhimappreciationfromnotjustmebutmycolleaguesaswell.Buthediddowellinexamstoo.Inthefinalexamoflastsemester,hegotahighscoreof90formycourse.

Heoftentalkswithmeabouthisidealtobecomeaneconomist.Tohelpquenchhisthirstforknowledge,Ihavelentmanyofmyownbookstohimandtutoredhiminhisself-studyprogram.Hehasbeenmuchmoreengrossedindoingindependentresearchthanpreparingforexams,buthisgradesstillkeephimrankedamongthetop25%ofhisclass.Ithinkheisaveryintelligentyoungfellow.

Mr.HuihasagoodcommandoftheEnglishlanguage.Asheiswellacquaintedwithme,hehasoftenhelpedmeinmyownresearchbytranslatingsomeEnglishessaysthatIamtoobusytotranslate.Histranslationsareusuallyquitegood.HisoralEnglishisgoodtoo.ComparedwithotherChinesestudentswhomaybeapplyingtoyourprogram,IthinkMr.Huishouldbeconsideredmorefavorably.
