编者按：PERSONALSTATEMENT"Whyonearthdoesanybodywanttodo5000-meterhell-and-toewalkingraceforasport?"Thisistheques...PERSONALSTATEMENT"Whyonearthdoesanybodywanttodo5000-meterhell-and-toewalkingraceforasport?"Thisisthequestionpeopleinvariablyaskwhentheyseemepracticeorcompeteonthetrackfield.Myresponsetothatquestionisoftenasimpleone:"Whynot?"Yes,whynot!Ihavebuiltgoodphysicalstaminabecauseofit;Ihavemadefriendsthroughcompetition;Ihavelearntvaluablelessonsaboutperseveringandnevergivingup.Aboveall,Ienjoywinningthegame.Itistruemyfavoritesportisnotasgracefulasgymnasticsorasexcitingas100-meterdash,atleastnotsoaccordingtopopularbelief.ButthissportingeventhashelpedmethroughtheyearsasIplodalongasastudentandasaresearcher.EversinceIwasachild,Ihavetakenalikingtoreading.Sciencewas,andstillis,mypassion.IrememberspendinglonghoursreadingScience,Nature,Polymer,Macromolecules,PhysicalReviewandanassortmentofothersciencebooksandjournals.ThemoreIread,thegreatermyappetiteforlearning.Despitetheheavyworkloadfromschool,IalwaysmanagedmytimecarefullysothatIcouldexplorescienceaboveandbeyondwhattheschoolcurriculacovered.Ididnotlimitmyselfjusttoscience,however.IreadChineseandEnglishnovelsandderivedmuchpleasurefromthefictitiousworld.IalsodevotedmuchofmytimelearningtowriteandspeakEnglish,anotherfavoritesubjectmatterofmineatschool.Whileanundergraduate,Imajoredinorganicchemistry.OnoftheprojectsrequiredthatIsynthesizePE-PPcopolymerbyusingZiegler-Nattacatalyst.Igainedmuchhands-onexperienceasIworkedonvariousexperiments.Later,IjoinedinthefeasibilityanalysisofaPCengineeringplastic,aprojectthatprovidedanopportunitytolearnaboutliteraturesearch,datagatheringandresearchtools.Formygraduationthesis,IchosetoworkonthepreparationofhighmodulusPANcarbon-fiber.Itwasachallengingtopicbecausenobodyinthecollegehadevertackledit.Togetherwithmyadvisersandmyfellowstudents,Ispentnumeroushoursinthelabbrainstorming,recording,observingandexperimenting.Therewerefrustratingmomentsofcourse,butwewereabletocomeupwithcreativesolutionsandmakesignificantheadwayintheresearch.EventhoughIwasnottheonlyoneparticipatinginthishugeandon-goingprojectandIdidnotstaylongenoughtoseeitscompletion,IwasproudofmycontributionaswellastheaccoladesIearnedfrommyprofessorsformythesis.MyGPAwasconsistentlyamongthehighestinmyclass.In1996,IwasenrolledatBeijingInstituteofClothingasagraduatestudentmajoringinchemicalfiber,withaspecialresearchfocusonthestructuresandpropertiesofPET-PA6blendfiber.There,Iwasfortunatetobeworkinginawell-equippedresearchenvironmentwithexperiencedspecialistsandsophisticatedinstruments.MuchofmytimewasdevotedtothestudyofpolymerphysicsandinstrumentalanalysisofpolymerinvolvingNMR,X-ray,DSCandSEM.Tobesure,ChinastillpalesincomparisonwiththeUnitedStatesintheareaofpolymerresearchandapplication.Andyet,itissuchapromisingarea.Ipersonallybelievethatfunctionalpolymers,polymerblends,polymerrheologyandthestudyofpolymerstructureholdverybrightfuture.ThereisawealthofinformationavailableintheStatesthatIcantapinto;agreatmanybest-in-classresearchfacilitiestochoosefromandsomeworld-renownedexpertstoworkwith.Itisanidealplaceforaspiringpolymerscientiststokeepcurrentwiththelatesttechnologies,tosetresearchtrends,andtomakeinnovations.ItisagainstthisbackdropthatIamapplyingforthedoctoralprograminPolymerScienceatPennsylvaniaStateUniversity.IknowtheUniversityhasoneofthebestNACCfootballprogramsandIamcurioustolearnaboutthegam.ButitistheprogramofferingsattheDepartmentofChemicalEngineeringandMaterialSciencethatcapturemyinterestbecausetheyfituniquelyintomyacademicandresearchplan.Givemysolidgroundinginmathematics,polymerchemistryandpolymerphysics,Icanconcentrateandexcelinthefollowingresearchareas:(1)PolymerCharacterization(2)PolymerComputerSimulation(3)FunctionalPolymerSynthesis(4)PolymerProcessing,Rheology(5)Structure-PropertyRelationshipsofPolymerDetermination,dedicationandconfidence,thesearethequalitiesthatIdevelopedovertheyearsontherunningtrack.ThesearealsothesamequalitiesthatIwillbringtothemorechallengingworkaheadofmeasIseektopursuemyfurtherstudiesintheU.S.
