编者按：PERSONALSTATEMENTByapplyingforPh.D.studiesatyouruniversity,Iamseekingtofulfillachildhooddreamtounderstan...PERSONALSTATEMENTByapplyingforPh.D.studiesatyouruniversity,Iamseekingtofulfillachildhooddreamtounderstandandappreciatethewondersofnature.BornandbroughtupinasmallcityontheYun-GuiplateauinsouthwestChina,IwasfullofcuriosityinmychildhoodasIobservedthedramaticweatherchangesthere.Inthiscitysurroundedbymountains,seasonswouldcomeandgowithclear-cutperimeters.Watchingthisyearinandyearoutfor17years,Icouldnothelpaskingwhatforceswerecausingsuchfascinatingalterations.Withamystifiedmind,Igraduatedin1989intotheNanjingInstituteofMeteorologytomajorinsynopticdynamics.TheinstituteoffersprobablythebestacademicprogramsofitskindinChina.Asahighlymotivatedundergraduate,Itook21coursesinmeteorology,scoringanoutstandingGPAof91.53/100(3.79/4).Inrelatedsubjectssuchasmathematics,physicsandcomputerscience,Ididwell,too,scoringaGPAof90.91/100(1.69-4).MyoverallGPArankedthesecondamongabout110studentsofmyyear,winningmetheInstituteScholarshipfor4consecutiveyears.In1992,IwasdesignatedanExcellentStudent,thehighesthonoroftheschool,giventoonlyonestudentofeachgradeinfouryears.Uponthecompletionofmyundergraduatestudiesin1993,myexcellentacademicrecordswonmeeasyacceptanceintoagraduateprogramataresearchcenterjointlyrunbytheChineseAcademyofMeteorologySciencesandtheNanjingInstituteofMeteorology.Iworkedunderthesupervisionofmyadvisor,thedistinguishedProfessorDingYihui,vice-chairmanoftheChineseAcademyofMeteorologicalSciencesandnowchairmanofNationalClimateCenter.Ikeptmyselfinformedofthelatestmeteorologyfindingsbyreadingawideselectionofreferencematerials,amongwhichareAtmosphericSciences,Acta,Meteo,Sinica.UndertheseasonedguidanceofProfessorDingandothernotedmeteorologists,whomIengagedinregulardiscussionsatseminarsandotheroccasions,Iconscientiouslytrainedmyselfinindependentresearch.Iwouldtakecareofthenitty-grittyofanyprojectsonmyown.Buildinguponmyundergraduaterecord,IscoredagraduateStudyofHeavyRainfallInfluencedbyTyphoonNo.9406wasnotonlyhighlyratedbymyprofessorsbutalsopublishedin…Onthestrengthofmyacademicrecords,IobtainedthepositionofaresearcheratNMC(spellitout,please)inmid1993,whenIreceivedmyMaster''sDegree.Ihavesincetakenpartinthreeprojects:(A)theDevelopmentandResearchofMeso-ScaleNumericalForecastSysteminBeijingArea,(B)theImportationandDevelopmentofLAPS/RAMSAnalysis-ForecastSystem,and(C)theDevelopmentandApplicationofALimited-AreaModelWithVariableResolution.Intheseprojects,IhaveputmyacademictrainingintoactualpracticeandgotacquaintedwiththestateofthetestresultsoftheparallelversionandserialversionofMM5.InprojectB,IinvestigatedintotheRAMSextensivelyandpresentedareportonitsprinciplesandapplicationsatNMC.LastMay,IworkedwithexpertsfromNOAAandIBMCorp.toinstalltheLAPS/RAMSsystem.Afterthat,IsucceededinusingnewtopographydatainRAMSandaddedtheverificationmechanismtothewholesystem.NowIamworkingonprojectC,inwhichIhaveincreasedthenumberofverticallevelsofthelimited-areamodelwithvariableresolutionfrom5to20.Inordertofinddefiniteeffectsofdifferentresolutionsinmodelforecast,Iamtryingtobuildthreemodelswithdifferentresolutions,unitgridandamodelwithvaryingresolutionsbasedontheoperationallimited-aremodelinNMC.Weareplanningtomakefurtherexperimentsbasedonthoseresults.Inanefforttobetterequipmyself,Ihavebeenconscientiouslyenhancingmycomputerskillsandexpertiseinthelasttwoyears.ItookclassestolearntheUNIXOperationSystemandSP2computer,andIhavetaughtmyselfParallelProgramming,MessagePassingLibraryonSP2,RS/6000Power2FortranProgramming,amongothers.Takingadvantageofthelearningopportunitiesatwork,IhavemasteredtheSp2,CrayaswellasthePC,andbecomeversedingraphicssoftware,GRADSandNCAR.Withthesecomputerskills,Iamnowmorecapableofnumericalforecastthaneverbefore.Ihave,however,foundthatwhatIhavelearnedisfarfromsufficienttomeetthechallengesinmyresearch.AlthoughInowknowalotmoreaboutseasonchangesthanIdidinmychildhood,natureisinmanywaysstillasmystifyingtomeasever.Ifanythinghaschanged,itisthatInowhaveevenmorequestionsonmymind,questionsthatarehardertoanswer.HencemydecisiontopursueadoctoraldegreeintheUnitedStates,whereresearchinatmosphericsciencesandotherrelatedfieldsisprobablymoreadvancedthananywhereelse.Ihopethat,withtheguidanceofyourdistinguishedfacultyandthebenefitofyouradvancedfacilities,myintellectualpotentialcanbebroughtintofullplaytoanswerthemoreandmoreprofoundquestionsthatbogglemymind.IplantoworkformyPhDwithaconcentrationonatmosphericdynamics,air-seainteraction,radiation,remotesensing,climatology,andhopetofulfillmydegreerequirementsin3to5themeteorologicalprogressinmyowncountryandtheSino-Americanscientificexchanges.Perhaps,Iwillnolongerhavetowonderabouteverylittlechangeintheweatherinmyhometownafewyearsdowntheroad.
